Adult Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Treatment
Compatior Counseling Center provides comprehensive outpatient Substance Use Disorder (SUD) treatment for adults 18 years of age and older. Our programs are designed to provide individualized, person-centered treatment while allowing patients to remain connected to their families, employment, education, and communities.
Level 1.0 – Outpatient ServicesFlexible treatment while maintaining daily responsibilities.
ASAM Level 1.0 Outpatient Services are appropriate for individuals who need structured SUD treatment but are able to maintain stability while living in the community. Treatment focuses on helping patients understand substance use patterns, develop recovery skills, reduce the risk of relapse, strengthen healthy relationships, and work toward individualized recovery goals.
Services may include individual counseling and group counseling, substance use education, motivational interviewing, cognitive and behavioral interventions, relapse-prevention planning, coping and emotional-regulation skills, identification of triggers and high-risk situations, recovery planning, development of healthy relationships and support systems, family education and support when appropriate, and education regarding medications and treatment options.
Patients may also receive case management and care coordination to address barriers that can interfere with treatment and recovery, including healthcare, mental health services, housing, transportation, employment, education, benefits, legal obligations, family needs, and connections to community resources.
Level 2.1 – Intensive Outpatient ServicesIncreased structure and support for individuals with greater treatment needs.
ASAM Level 2.1 Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides a more structured and intensive level of outpatient treatment for individuals who require greater frequency, support, and clinical intervention while still being able to live safely in the community.
Level 2.1 includes individual counseling and group counseling, with treatment addressing substance use patterns, cravings and triggers, relapse prevention, recovery skills, coping strategies, decision-making, emotional regulation, behavioral change, development of sober support systems, family and interpersonal relationships, and other issues that may affect a patient's ability to maintain recovery.
The increased structure of IOP allows the treatment team to provide closer support and regularly evaluate the patient's progress, risks, barriers, and changing treatment needs. Care coordination and case management are also incorporated to help patients address medical, behavioral health, housing, employment, educational, transportation, legal, family, and other needs that may affect treatment participation and long-term stability.
How Is the Level of Care Determined? – ASAM CriteriaPlacement in Level 1.0 or Level 2.1 is determined through an individualized assessment using The ASAM Criteria.
ASAM stands for the American Society of Addiction Medicine. The ASAM Criteria provide a standardized framework used by addiction treatment professionals to evaluate an individual's needs and determine the appropriate intensity and setting of SUD treatment.
Rather than determining treatment solely by the substance a person uses or how frequently they use it, the ASAM assessment considers the whole person. Depending on the applicable ASAM Criteria edition and assessment framework, clinicians evaluate areas such as intoxication and withdrawal needs, physical health, mental health and cognitive needs, substance-use-related risks, readiness and recovery needs, and the person's recovery environment and available supports.
The assessment helps the treatment team determine whether Level 1.0 Outpatient Services, Level 2.1 Intensive Outpatient Services, or another level of care is most appropriate. Level of care can also be reassessed as the patient progresses so services can be adjusted based on changing clinical needs.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)Medication and counseling working together to support recovery.
Participants in Compatior's Level 1.0 and Level 2.1 outpatient programs may also participate in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) when clinically appropriate. MAT combines medications with counseling, education, behavioral health services, and recovery support to help individuals manage substance use disorders and support long-term recovery.
Care CoordinationConnecting patients to the services they need.
At Compatior Counseling Center, all patients enrolled in Adult Outpatient Substance Use Disorder Treatment receive care coordination services as part of their treatment program. Care coordination is integrated with substance use disorder treatment to help patients address medical, behavioral health, social, and practical needs that may affect their ability to participate in treatment and achieve long-term recovery.
What Is Care Coordination?
Care coordination is a patient-centered service that helps organize and connect the different services and resources a patient may need during recovery. The care coordination team works collaboratively with the patient, their treatment team, and, when appropriate and authorized, outside providers to help reduce barriers to care and ensure services work together toward the patient's treatment and recovery goals.
Care coordination may include assistance with primary and specialty healthcare, mental health services, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), residential SUD treatment referrals, medication and pharmacy coordination, housing and recovery housing resources, transportation, public benefits, employment and workforce services, education and vocational programs, legal and court-related obligations, probation or parole requirements, family and parenting resources, identification documents, and other community-based supportive services.
Care coordinators may also assist patients with referrals, appointment scheduling, communication with outside providers, follow-up on referrals, obtaining needed documentation, navigating healthcare and community systems, and identifying barriers that could interfere with treatment participation.
Case ManagementHelping patients turn recovery goals into achievable steps.
Case management focuses on the practical needs and personal goals that can affect a patient's ability to successfully participate in treatment and maintain recovery. Staff work with patients to identify needs, establish goals, develop action steps, provide referrals, connect with community resources, and follow up on progress.
Depending on individual needs, case management may help patients address housing, employment, education, identification documents, public benefits, transportation, family responsibilities, legal obligations, healthcare access, and other barriers to stability. By addressing these needs alongside SUD treatment, Compatior helps patients work toward greater independence, stability, and long-term recovery.
